Great Debate

Last Friday some of our students took part in the Historical Association’s Great Debate competition at SFX College.  This is a public-speaking competition for 16-19 year olds nationwide and the final of this year's competition will be taking place at Windsor Castle on Saturday 28 March 2020. It is being run in partnership with BBC World Histories Magazine.

In this internal eliminator, students had to submit a five-minute argument to the question: “Should we judge historical figures by the morals of today?”

As a tough moral conundrum with many avenues to explore and address, students were encouraged to formulate their argument around subject matter that they are interested in when making their argument.
We wish the selected students the best of luck in the London heats against other schools and colleges.

This competition is an ideal opportunity for students to gain valuable experience in speaking to an audience and developing their debating skills, confidence and self-esteem.

The winner and runners-up of the competition will receive a cash prize, and their school will win prizes from our sponsors. All finalists will also receive free student membership of the Historical Association.
