Science

Are you interested in science and practical
laboratory work? Would you like to gain real
industry experience as part of your qualification?
If the answers are yes, our T Level Technical Qualification
in Science gives you the opportunity to develop
scientific knowledge, practical laboratory skills and
professional workplace experience required for careers
in the science sector.
Unlike traditional academic science pathways, the
qualification combines theoretical scientific knowledge
with practical laboratory skills, employer-led assessment
and substantial workplace experience, preparing
students for progression into higher education,
apprenticeships or skilled employment within the
science sector. Students complete a minimum of 315
hours of industry placement with an employer during
the course. The industry placement forms an integral
part of the T Level programme and provides experience
of working within the science sector.

Occupational Specialism
Students will also complete an occupational
specialism in Laboratory Sciences, developing
skills in:
Designing and carrying out scientific investigations
Performing laboratory techniques safely
and accurately
Collecting and interpreting experimental data
Reviewing scientific work and
recommending improvements

Assessment is split equally between the Science
Core Component and the Laboratory Sciences
Occupational Specialism. Students complete
three externally assessed written examinations
and an Employer Set Project as part of the Core
Component, alongside the Laboratory Sciences
Occupational Specialism, where they put their
scientific knowledge into practice and develop
the skills employers are looking for. This includes
planning and carrying out investigations, using
laboratory techniques safely, analysing experimental
data, and evaluating scientific work to identify
improvements. Each component contributes 50%
of the overall qualification.

This qualification can lead to university, a higher
or degree apprenticeship, or employment
within the science sector. You could progress
to courses such as Biomedical Science, Forensic
Science or Environmental Science, take a higher
apprenticeship in areas such as Laboratory
Science or Healthcare Science, or move straight
into roles such as Laboratory Research Scientist,
Biomedical Scientist, Medical Laboratory
Assistant or Food Safety Analyst.

5 GCSEs Grade 4 or above, including Grade 4 in Maths, Grade 4 in English Language and Grades 5,4 in Combined Science

T level industry placements provide students with the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for skilled employment in their chosen occupation which are less easily attainable by doing a qualification alone. We will be arranging visits from employers in the sector to ensure students are matched with appropriate businesses.

What Our Students Say

The support I received from passionate teachers who pushed me to aim higher, to the tailored guidance with university applications made all the difference. SFX believed in my potential even when I doubted myself, and that encouragement gave me the confidence to pursue my ambitions. Without that foundation, I don’t think I’d be on the path to a legal career today.
