Introdcution:

English Language AS-level is a varied and interesting course that provides you with opportunities to study spoken and written language in a range of contexts.  The course will include studying your own speech, how you relate to other people in conversation, how language influences the way we see ourselves, other people and how it reveals the preoccupations and concerns of our society.You will study language topics including Language and Gender, Power and Technology. You will also develop your writing skills by producing two creative writing pieces for a real audience with a specific purpose. Students may choose to write in a variety of genres such as biographies, travel writing, recipe book introductions, short stories and scripts.  In the second year you will study how children acquire language and how language had changed since 1700.  The coursework at A2 involves investigating an area of language that you are particularly interesting in.  You will collect the data yourself to produce a report on your data and findings. You will also produce a media piece, reflecting on your investigation for a general audience.

Specific Course Entry Requirements: In addition to the Minimum Entry Requirements you will need a grade B in GCSE English Language and grade B GCSE English Literature. Applicants with a grade C in English Literature may be considered subject to availability.
